It took Tom about two months to post all of the Silverton pics to Flickr, and it took me another two months to post the link here.

I was so freaking excited about the new iPhone. 3G data, full internet, GPS, WiFi, all wrapped up in that slick Apple UI — and for only $199! I was going to be the first one in line tomorrow. Then I went over to the AT&T iPhone FAQ, and learned that the $199 / $299 pricing is only good for current AT&T customers if you are eligible for an upgrade. I’m not eligible until next March!!! My price would be $399 / $499, which puts one more shiny new toy out of my price range. Damn you AT&T, I knew it had to be too good to be true. Now, I fully understand that the price is only so low because AT&T is subsidizing. But even at the higher price point, you still have to sign up for a new two-year contract! Looks like I’m stuck with my crappy N75 for another 6 months… Maybe if enough people complain, we’ll see a AT&T change their minds. Hah, yeah right. I didn’t buy my car there, but I get all of my service done at Cochran Subaru. So far I’ve been happy with their work, and they haven’t given me any grief about warranty issues. One really nice touch is that they have free Wi-Fi and little computer desks in the waiting area. It’s nice to be able to get work done while I’m waiting for my car. It would be nice if they had some bagels though. I’m getting hungry. I wonder if they’ll let me take the new STi out for a test-drive / lunch run… It’s official, the Dark & Stormy is my favorite new drink for the summer. I tried one a few weeks ago at a bar in Baltimore, and it was delicious! So much better than a boring old rum and coke.
I know you probably won’t believe me, but you really have to use Gosling’s Black Seal. No Cap’n Morgan. No Bacardi. No Meyers. Goslings only! Same goes for the ginger beer. It has to be ginger beer, not ginger ale! Big difference! You really should try to find Bermuda ginger beer like Barritt’s or Regatta, but a Jamaican like Reed’s will work too. Reed’s seems to be easier to find in grocery stores, although my buddy over at McBroom’s Beer Store told me that they have Regatta in stock. Too bad I’ll probably never be able to find it in a local bar. Cap’n’ and ginger ale just isn’t the same… This pretty much sums up my day… Priya, if you’re reading this… just kidding! I was extremely productive and proactive in my studies today! Hahaha. Ahem. Hmmm… I’m sitting here watching Hostel for the first time, and I totally recognized the town in “Slovakia” that they show up at. It turns out, I was there! The town is called Český Krumlov, and it is actually in the Czech Republic. I had a great time there, but nothing like in the movie! I’m sitting here at the coffee shop, working on a paper, and couldn’t help overhearing the conversation happening next to me. Some guy is honestly trying to tell the poor girl sitting with him that oil changes are nothing but some big conspiracy by the oil companies to sell more oil. According to him, you never actually need to change your oil. He was also complaining that the old Model T and a modern Suburban get the same gas mileage. Right. Because it really makes sense to compare the fuel economy of a 1200 lb car with a 2.9L, 20 hp, 4-cylinder engine, to a 5700 lb vehicle with a 5.3L 320 hp V8. Got an email from the fine folks at Silverton Mountain in Colorado. Yesterday was their opening day. Wanna know how bad-ass Silverton is? This pretty much sums it up…
Yeah. It looks like Ryan Clark and I have something in common.
I’ll bet my scar is more badass than his though. When I ruptured my spleen, it was turned out to need emergency surgery. I was told afterward that they would have been able to go in through a much smaller incision if they had time, and didn’t need to explore my insides to make sure nothing else was busted. I don’t really understand why there would be any question about him “playing football again” though. Once your spleen is gone, it’s gone. It’s not like you can break it again. There might be little things you need to watch out for as far as resistance to certain infections goes, but other than that it’s not like you miss the damn thing. He’s probably better off without it. Now I’ll bet that this part might confuse some people:
When I broke my spleen, my shoulder hurt really bad too. Because I landed on my left side, I thought I might have sprained it or cracked a bone in it or something. Nope. It turns out that your spleen is connected to some nerves that run through your shoulder, or something like that. In any case, when something is wrong your spleen, your left shoulder hurts. I think that’s pretty cool. Some of you might be familiar with the work I’ve done on the Trinetra project. Right now I’m working on porting our Symbian Series 60 application to Symbian UIQ 3, so that we can demo it on the MOTORIZR Z8. There are two major tasks involved with the port. First, we have to get our codebase ready for the application signing requirements imposed in Symbian 9.x. Second, we have to port the entire UI from Series 60 to UIQ. This post involves the first issue: signing the application. I have been struggling for the past week just to get a signed skeleton application installed on the Z8. Every time I tried to sign and install the app, I would get a “certificate expired at the time of use” error. I kept trying to create new self-signed certificates, I requested Symbian Developer certificates, all with no luck. The time seemed to be set correctly on my desktop and the phone, so I just couldn’t figure out the problem. You see, the key word in that last sentence is seemed. The time zone setting on the Z8 was labeled as “Eastern Standard Time”. However, it was not in fact “Eastern Standard Time”, but “Eastern Summer Time” — an Australian time zone. Here is where it gets interesting. Eastern Standard Time is UTC-0500 hours and Eastern Summer Time is UTC+1100 hours. Now let’s say that both the phone and the certificate issuer thought it was 12:00 in their respective local times. If the certificate is created and valid from 12:00 Eastern Standard, that translates to 07:00 UTC. However, if the application is sent directly to the phone, it is around 12:00 Eastern Summer, which translates to 23:00 UTC. The phone basically thinks that the certificate is being used before it has even become valid. The thing that kept throwing me is that the Australian time zones are mistakenly labeled as Eastern Standard Time instead of Eastern Summer Time. Even more annoying is that I can’t find any way to set Eastern Standard Time. The Z8 gives you a list of cities to choose time zones for, but there are no U.S. east coast cities on that list. New York is usually the representative city for Eastern Standard, but it is absent. Los Angeles, Portland, San Francisco and Seattle are all there representing west coast PST, and even Chicago is there for the midwest CST, but there is no love for the East. For now I’m just pretending to be in Chicago. I realize that this phone is targeted at non-U.S. markets, but people do travel to the east coast of the U.S. every now and then! |
