Even though this blog isn’t all that popular, I still get a lot of comment spam. Most of it doesn’t make it onto my pages because I moderate everything and require logins to post. However, what few comments I do get from friends (OK, mostly just Eric) usually get delayed because I don’t go through and moderate all that often.
It turns out that requiring logins isn’t all that effective. Looking through my user list today, I found about four bots that had registered. Two of them were well known:
username: xdfsd45oi
email: johnsmithuswe@gmail.comusername: domi95bin4
email: dominicgrebin@gmail.com
The other two I didn’t recognize, but looked suspicious so I deleted them anyway.
Here is my new plan. I enabled the Akismet spam filtering plugin, which should hopefully take care of the bulk of spam comments and trackbacks. I also took away the login restriction, so you no longer have to login to post comments. However, you still have to enter your name and email.
Hopefully now I’ll get more comments from friends too lazy to register, and fewer comments from spam bots.

I’ve been using Akismet for a long time now on all my WordPress installs. I’d say it catches over 99% of spam comments!
p.s. get ch3ap v1 agr@ from me
So you’re the one who’s been sending me all of those emails!
